Exploring the surface of near Earth asteroids, Mars and the Moon impose a wide array of thermal, atmospheric, radiation and gravity conditions. The soil, or regolith, of these planetary surfaces impose additional risks to surface technologies, specifically when small regolith particles (dust) are transported and infiltrate mechanical and electrical systems.

Objective

The objectives of this project are to characterize the effects of planetary dust on surface exploration system components in relevant environmental conditions, and develop mitigating technologies to minimize their performance degradations or loss of efficiency. More specifically, this project will focus on the design and optimization of Electric Curtains for cleaning dust from solar panels, radiators and optical sensors used on a lunar rover.
