EDEM has been used to model the behavior of particles inside a rotating drum, to analyze in which areas extruders should be positioned in order to apply a protective coating agent to the particles.
Different calibration methods were used to represent the behavior of the material inside the drum, such as filling percentage of particles inside the drum, and time of residence of the particles “travelling” within the drum. EDEM was used to define positions where coating extruders could be most useful within the system.

With an initial study model developed, the idea of future research is to use EDEM in underground mining scenarios, such as ore flow within drawbells to improve its shape to optimize material flow, materials handling, and conveyor belt systems.

The software is very user frienldy, with a great potential for studying how particles behave under various scenarios. It has applicability in many areas of research.
