Influence of Tool Inclination in Micro Ball End Milling of Quartz Glass
Glass is difficult to machine duo to its brittle fracture during machining. Tool tilt angle can be a remarkable effect on the surface finish of glass in micro ball end milling. Based on theoretical analysis and simulation by 3D discrete element method, an optimal mathematic model for tool inclination is constructed governed by edge radius of ball-nose of end mill and cutting thickness. Corresponding experiments are conducted for model verification. The results show that different cutting thickness, cutter shape and spindle speed have a largely influence on machining mechanics of glass.
