MMD uses EDEM simulation to assist design of innovative landmine clearance rig

Mining Machinery Developments (MMD), a world leader in the design, manufacture and supply of mineral processing solutions, donated a revolutionary landmine clearance rig to The HALO Trust, the world’s largest humanitarian mine clearance organization.

The MMD Demining Sizer Rig which will be deployed in Zimbabwe is able to shift through a wide variety of soil types and ensure that all anti-personnel mines contained in the soil are crushed or detonated. The team at MMD used EDEM simulation software to assist them in the design of the rig, enabling them to thoroughly check the material flow to ensure simulations reflected real-world experience.

James Rudge, Senior Analysis Engineer, MMD Design and Consultancy Ltd, explained the role of EDEM in this project:

As market leaders in Sizer technology – and celebrating 40 years of innovation in mining equipment – we have utilized EDEM to assist us on dozens of different mining projects since 2013. The ability to model the bulk flow of material through feeder hopper systems and sizer chambers is vital for us.

Our recent donation of a mobile landmine clearance rig to The HALO Trust is another example where we relied heavily upon the software’s capabilities. Dealing with landmines, there is no room for error; the package gave us the ability to identify and rectify any potential flow problems early on to avoid potentially devastating issues onsite.

The unit incorporates a hopper, infeed conveyor, two Sizers and a discharge conveyor. A CAD model of the structure and belt profiles was imported for final modelling. Moving planes were used to accurately simulate movement on the conveyors. The material properties of shape, bulk density and angle of repose were set to help predict the correct bulk material behavior. Simplified sizer shaft geometries were used with precise rotational velocities to accurately show material flow through the machine chambers. Final analysis helped the design team choose the optimum hopper layout and chute geometries in partnership with The HALO Trust’s real-world experience.
