Open Source Coupling Enables Parallel Processing for Both ANSYS® Fluent® and EDEM® in Co-Simulation Environments, Increasing Computational Speeds for Simulating Particle-Fluid Interactions
Edinburgh, Scotland and Denver, CO, USA – 09 September, 2013 — DEM Solutions, the company setting the standard for engineering application of discrete element method (DEM) simulation, is pleased to introduce a new open source coupling for DEM-CFD co-simulation – the “Parallel EDEM CFD Coupling for ANSYS Fluent (Version 1.0)”. This new open source coupling makes it faster and easier for EDEM customers to run co-simulations of ANSYS Fluent 14.5 and EDEM 2.5.1 to model particle-fluid systems.
Since the development of our first EDEM-CFD coupling with Fluent in 2006, DEM Solutions has been dedicated to meeting the needs of our customers by developing and continually expanding the interfacing capability of the EDEM® software platform. The Parallel EDEM CFD Coupling for ANSYS Fluent, developed through collaboration with ANSYS and EDEM customer Astec Industries, Inc., functions seamlessly with the DEM Solutions EDEM CFD Coupling Interface.
Parallel EDEM CFD Coupling for ANSYS Fluent is used in DEM-CFD co-simulation of a smoke abatement system at a hot-mix asphalt load-out area. As falling asphalt displaces air in the truck bed, smoke is drawn upwards and captured. (Coloring shows particle and fluid temperatures)

The Parallel EDEM CFD Coupling for ANSYS Fluent provides a major performance improvement as it allows both ANSYS Fluent 14.5 and EDEM 2.5.1 to run using parallel processing in co-simulation environments. As an open source software, users also have access to the coupling source code and can innovate and customize how Fluent and EDEM work together.
The Parallel EDEM CFD Coupling for ANSYS Fluent is distributed under the Apache 2.0 license (an Open Source Software License) with the permission of ANSYS, Inc. As open source software this coupling is not supported by DEM Solutions or ANSYS, but DEM Solutions has established a forum in the EDEM User Forum for members of the global EDEM User Community to ask each other questions, discuss applications and share experiences with this coupling.
The Parallel EDEM CFD Coupling for ANSYS Fluent is currently available for the Windows 64-bit operating system, with a Linux version under development and expected to be available soon.
